The University of Rome “Roma Tre”, Italy, is accepting applications for its Master in Human Development and Food Security programme. The Masters Degree programme consists of a theoretic part lasting 9 months (November-July) and an internship or dissertation period of 3 months (August-October). A total of 40 seats will be allocated to foreign (and Italian) graduates holding at least a Bachelors degree. Tutor scholarships offered by the Master HDFS and Barilla G. e R. Fratelli S.p.A. are available to outstanding students who are citizens of countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe (including Russia), and Latin America on the basis of academic merit.

The completed application file should be send to the Admissions Office by May 31st, 2012 at the latest. Candidates applying for scholarships must also send the Scholarship Request Form together with their application file by May 31st, 2012.

The competition will evaluate, recognize and reward the contribution of women scientists in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and North Africa who have been undertaking R&D activities related to the theme “Feeding 1 billion in Africa in a changing world” with outstanding research outputs. Winners will be awarded special prizes and their contributions will be published and made available widely. The competition is expected to raise the profile of women and youth involved in science and showcase them as role models.

Deadline for submission is 14th May 2012.

Dr Danny Hunter from Bioversity International alerted us to the opportunity for interested graduating students to enrol in Australia’s Charles Sturt University postgraduate programme. The Charles Sturt University is keen to crank up its numbers of international students and global reach of its courses. Danny is looking forward to engaging potential Asian candidates in the Masters of Sustainable Agriculture programme. This MSA programme is eligible for the AusAID Development Scholarship whereby courses on agriculture and rural development are priority sectors for a number of Asian countries included in this list of eligible countries. The scholarship covers both Master and PhD courses. The closing date also varies for different countries, with the earliest being the 30th of April 2012.

The Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) is a competitive grant that enables scientists from national research institutes and universities within the eastern and central Africa region to conduct research at the world-class research facilities of the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), in Nairobi, Kenya.

Scientists who are conducting research in the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply, as are women candidates:

Research on orphan (understudied) crops to boost productivity, including

  • Amaranth
  • African wild mushrooms
  • Enset
  • Other under-researched important African crops

SEARCA Graduate Scholarships are open to applicants from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam who are regular employees of academic, research or government institutions and not more than 35 years old. The topic of research for thesis/dissertation must be in line with SEARCA’s current priority themes:

1) Natural Resources Management
Focuses on management of land and water resources; biodiversity management for food security; and risk assessment and the impacts of climate change on agrobiodiversity

2) Agricultural Competitiveness
Addresses agricultural competitiveness, food security and rural poverty alleviation, natural resources management
