The Coalition to Diversify Income through Underused Crops (CoDI) is a group of organisations in India and Vietnam led by the International Centre for Underutilised Crops. Funded by DFID’s Research into Use Program 2008-2011, the coalition will provide community services for production, post-harvest and marketing, to help disadvantaged people in India and Vietnam have better market access to generate sustainable income, and have more options for better land husbandry.

Colombo 107In early March 2008, ICUC and GFU organised an international symposium under the umbrella of the International Society for Horticultural Sciences and together with further partners on Underutilized Plants for Food, Nutrition, Income and Sustainable Development in Arusha, Tanzania. The symposium was organised around four main areas of importance for underutilized plants: food security, nutrition and health, income generation, and environmental sustainability. The over 200 participants were invited to share and discuss reasons for success and failure of diverse approaches to promote underutilized plants. An electronic discussion forum followed the symposium during May 2008 and yielded a joint Statement of Intent. The proceedings of the symposium are available from ISHS.
